Anna Schwartz, ARNP, PhD, FAAN – Anna is an author, researcher, educator, and advanced practice nurse practitioner. She currently holds the Scottsdale Healthcare Research endowed chair and serves as an associate research professor at Arizona State University. Dr. Schwartz is president of Coleman Health and Wellness where she directs Horses Providing Hope and Healing, a nonprofit horse therapy program for cancer survivors and at-risk youth.
Naomi Aaronson, MA OTR/L CHT CPI, Cancer Exercise Trainer
Naomi is an occupational therapist, mat Pilates instructor, and certified cancer exercise trainer who specializes in breast cancer recovery. She is both the author on many published articles and courses including Breast Cancer Recovery: On Land and In Water as well as Return to Life: Breast Cancer Recovery Using Pilates. Naomi is a highly sought after speaker who has appeared at MAOT. MEDSTAR Rehab, IDEA Fitness Fusion, and is a regular lecturer at Touro College.

Course objectives
Upon completion, the registrant will be able to identify the various stages of breast cancer, the anatomy affected by breast cancer surgery and how to manage the side effects. The registrant will be able to develop and implement an exercise program for women in various stages of breast cancer recovery. The registrant will be able to identify the major physical and psychological problems that the patient faces and be able to use assessment and monitoring tools.
1) Identify risk factors associated with breast cancer.
2) Outline methods used to detect and diagnose breast cancer.
3) Name the relevant anatomy affected by breast cancer surgery.
4) Identify the major types of surgery for breast cancer.
5) Discuss the side effects of both local and systemic treatments.
6) Discuss the major physical and psychological problems faced by breast cancer survivors.
7) Outline realistic and attainable exercise goals for this population.
8) Plan an effective and safe exercise program based on client assessment of needs for women undergoing treatment and women post-treatment.

Lauve Metcalfe, MS, CWC, FAWHP, is a licensed wellness coach, educator and an organizational health consultant specializing in marketing and program development of wellness information to consumers. She served on the faculty at the University of Arizona, College of Medicine for over 18 years.
Linda Houtkooper, PhD, RD, is a Professor in the Department of Nutritional Sciences, a Registered Dietitian and an Associate Director for the Arizona Cooperative Extension system at the University of Arizona. Dr. Houtkooper’s research and educational focuses are nutrition and physical activity for health and wellness, osteoporosis prevention, and improving sports performance.
Scott Going, PhD, received his doctoral degree in Exercise Physiology from the University of Illinois in 1985. He joined the faculty at the University of Arizona in the same year and has taught classes in Exercise and Sport Sciences, Physiological Sciences, and Nutritional Sciences.
Timothy Lohman, PhD, is Director of the Center for Physical Activity and Nutrition at the University of Arizona. Dr. Lohman is also the PI of the BEST study (Bone, Estrogen, and Strength Training), which was designed to investigate short-term effects of strength training on bone mineral density and body composition in post-menopausal women.
Vanessa A. Farrell, PhD, RD, Vanessa A. Farrell, PhD., R.D., is an Associate in Extension in the Department of Nutritional Sciences and coordinator of the Nutritional Assessment Lab at the University of Arizona. She has been involved in large multi-cohort studies such as the Bone Estrogen and Strength Training (BEST) study, and the profile-based, internet-linked Obesity Trial (PILOT).

Course objectives
Upon completion, the registrant will be able to identify the common osteoporosis fracture sites and identify the risk factors involved in osteoporosis. Measurements will be made for bone density and a BEST exercise program will be developed to improve poor bone density and prevent future bone loss. The registrant will be able to incorporate a nutrition program in combination with an exercise program for good bone health and know how to monitor this program.
1) Identify the spine, hip, and wrist as the most common osteoporosis-related fracture site.
2) Recognize that medical therapy, nutrition, exercise, and other lifestyle practices can help to prevent and treat osteoporosis.
3) Outline the primary and secondary risk factors for osteoporosis.
4) Identify dual energy x-ray absorptiometry and ultrasonometry as devices for assessing bone mass, bone strength, and fracture risk.
5) Explain general finding from exercise training studies and interpret their meeting for exercise prescription for osteoporosis prevention.
6) Identify exercises to be avoided in older persons with osteoporosis and persons with low bone mineral density.

Course description

Her company provides prenatal and postpartum fitness certification training and information for maternal healthcare providers, fitness professionals, and military medical staff.
Catherine is a featured speaker at medical, fitness, and maternal healthcare provider conferences. She has been featured in articles on prenatal and postpartum fitness and health in The American Journal of Medicine and Sports, among many more.
Gwen Hyatt, MS, founded DSW Fitness (Desert Southwest Fitness, Inc.) in 1980 to provide continuing education for fitness, health, rehabilitation and clinical professionals. With a double master’s degree in exercise science and gerontology, Gwen is highly respected for her work with exercise in aging and special populations. She has authored 14 correspondence courses and presented at more than 20 IDEA conventions.
Gwen is a former faculty member at Bemidji State University and the University of Arizona. She has been the recipient of the Southern Arizona Small Business Award for Excellence as a Woman-Owned Business, the Utah Fitness Instructors Association Leadership Award and many others.

Course objectives
Upon completion, the registrant will be able to identify the effect of exercise on maternal and fetal health, and design and develop exercise programs for the prenatal and postpartum woman. This will include a complete understanding of anatomical and physiological changes as a result of pregnancy. The registrant will include exercise goals for each type and monitor the exercise program, being able to address any complications or health issues.
